Artificial turf with a paver border and river rock installed by Ayala's Landscape Professionals $9 to $18 per sq ft

Artificial turf cost per square foot in Prescott

Artificial turf runs $9 to $18 per square foot installed, depending on the turf you choose. Most of what you pay for sits under it: digging out the old surface, a compacted base and a slope that sheds snowmelt and monsoon rain. Up here turf has to handle freezing nights and the occasional snow load as well as summer sun, and when turf ripples or puddles after a winter, the base is usually where the job was cut short.

Example: a 600 sq ft backyard lawn in mid-range turf comes to about $6,600 to $8,400.

How we install artificial turf
New front yard sod lawn with irrigation installed in the Prescott area $2 to $6 per sq ft

Sod installation cost per square foot

Real grass runs $2 to $6 per square foot installed, and ground prep decides where you land. At our elevation most new lawns are a cool-season blend such as tall fescue, which handles cold winters far better than the Bermuda grass used around Phoenix. Sod needs steady water to root, so plan a sprinkler zone with it and lay it in spring or early fall, when it establishes fastest.

Example: a 1,000 sq ft front lawn with old grass removed and the soil amended comes to about $3,000 to $4,500.

Paver patio built by Ayala's Landscape Professionals in Prescott, AZ $14 to $32 per sq ft

Paver and flagstone patio cost

Patios run $14 to $32 per square foot installed. Standard concrete pavers sit at the low end, premium pavers with a border or pattern in the middle, and flagstone or natural stone at the top. In a climate that freezes and thaws all winter, the compacted gravel base and the edge restraint matter more than the stone you see, because that is what keeps a patio from heaving and settling.

Example: a 15 x 20 ft patio in premium pavers with a border comes to about $5,400 to $7,200.

Flagstone stepping stone path through a lawn installed by Ayala's Landscape Professionals $7 to $34 per sq ft

Walkway and garden path cost

A walkway runs $7 to $10 per square foot for a decomposed granite path with edging, $16 to $22 for concrete pavers and $24 to $34 for flagstone set in mortar. Width drives the square footage more than people expect: a 4 ft walk is comfortable for two people side by side, while 3 ft works for a side yard path.

Example: a 4 x 30 ft paver front walk comes to about $1,920 to $2,640.

Walkways, pavers and full installs
Retaining wall and paver steps on a sloped backyard in Prescott, AZ $28 to $85 per sq ft of wall face

Retaining wall cost per square foot

Retaining walls are priced per square foot of wall face, length times height: about $28 to $85 installed, from interlocking block to natural stone and boulder walls. Many Prescott and Prescott Valley lots slope, and a wall is often what turns a hillside into a patio or a flat lawn. Drainage behind the wall and a proper footing are what keep it standing, and taller walls or walls holding up a driveway can need engineering and a permit.

Example: a 40 ft long, 3 ft tall decorative block wall (120 sq ft of face) comes to about $4,560 to $6,600.

Sloped backyard finished with rock, trees and shrubs by Ayala's Landscape Professionals $2.50 to $7.50 per sq ft

Rock and decomposed granite cost

Rock and decomposed granite run $2.50 to $7.50 per square foot installed over weed barrier. Decomposed granite is the most affordable and packs into a firm surface, river rock adds texture, and accent boulders and steel edging give a finished, designed look. Rock is the low-water choice for most front yards here, and it is also the safer choice next to the house in wildfire country, where bark mulch can carry embers.

Example: an 800 sq ft front yard in decomposed granite comes to about $2,000 to $2,800.

Newly planted evergreen tree staked in a Prescott, AZ yard $60 to $1,200 per plant

Tree and shrub planting cost

Planting is priced per plant: about $60 to $150 for 5-gallon shrubs and perennials, $200 to $450 for 15-gallon trees and large shrubs, and $500 to $1,200 for 24-inch box trees. Plants for this area have to be cold-hardy, low-water and, in many neighborhoods, able to stand up to deer and javelina. If an old tree has to come out first, our tree removal crew handles that too.

Example: eight 5-gallon shrubs comes to about $480 to $1,200.

All of our landscaping services
Irrigation line being installed in a planting bed in Prescott, AZ $450 to $1,800 per zone

Irrigation and drip system cost per zone

Irrigation is priced per zone, one valve watering one area: about $450 to $1,800 per zone depending on whether we tie into your existing system or add new valves and a smart controller. Drip lines water beds and trees at the roots, and sprinklers cover lawns. Every system here also has to live through freezing winters, so the backflow device and valves need to be protected and drained or winterized.

Example: two new zones, one drip and one lawn comes to about $1,500 to $2,400.

Our irrigation system work
$110 to $350 per fixture

Landscape lighting cost per fixture

Low-voltage LED landscape lighting runs $110 to $350 per fixture installed, with the transformer, wire and timer shared across the fixtures. Path lights, step lights, tree uplights and patio lights make a yard usable on cool Prescott evenings and safer to walk at night. Planning lighting into your design before the turf and pavers go in keeps wire runs hidden and costs down.

Example: ten brass or copper LED fixtures comes to about $1,600 to $2,400.

Prescott cost drivers

What moves your price in the Prescott highlands

The calculator assumes a typical site. Prescott and Prescott Valley sit at roughly 5,000 to 5,400 feet, and building here is not the same as building in Phoenix. These are the conditions we look for before we quote.

Ayala's crew preparing and leveling the base for a paver project in Yavapai County
Base preparation on a Yavapai County hardscape job. The work under the surface is what keeps a patio flat through years of freeze and thaw.

Granite and rock in the ground

Much of the Prescott area sits on granite. Digging a patio base, a wall footing or a tree hole can hit solid rock or buried boulders that take a breaker, an auger or extra hands to get through. We look for it before we quote, so it is not a surprise halfway through the job.

Slope and drainage

Hillside lots are common here, and monsoon storms from July through September send a lot of water downhill fast. Grading the yard to move water away from the house, and walls with drainage behind them, are often worth more than any upgrade you can see.

Freeze and thaw

Winter nights regularly drop below freezing. Pavers need a deeper, well-compacted base so they do not heave, irrigation backflow devices and valves need protection, and every plant has to be hardy enough for the cold. That is part of why Phoenix pricing and Phoenix plant lists do not carry over.

Demolition, haul-off and access

Old lawn, rock, concrete and roots have to come out and go somewhere, which means labor and dump fees. If a skid steer fits through the gate, base work goes quickly; if everything moves by wheelbarrow, labor goes up.

Wildfire and defensible space

Homes that back onto chaparral or forest benefit from defensible space: thinned brush, well-spaced plants and rock instead of bark close to the house. If your lot needs clearing first, our fire risk reduction work can be part of the same project.

HOA approval and water use

Many Prescott Valley neighborhoods need HOA approval for front yard changes, so build that time into your plan. Choosing turf, rock and low-water plants over a large lawn lowers your water use for years, which often matters more than the difference in install price.

FAQ

Landscaping cost questions we hear most

How much does landscaping cost in Prescott?

Around Prescott and Prescott Valley, typical installed prices run about $9 to $18 per square foot for artificial turf, $14 to $32 for a paver or flagstone patio, $2.50 to $7.50 for rock and decomposed granite, and $28 to $85 per square foot of retaining wall face. A low-water front yard comes in around $5,100 to $7,740, a turf and patio backyard around $13,950 to $19,500, and a hillside backyard with a retaining wall around $25,080 to $36,180. The calculator on this page prices your own mix.

How much does landscaping cost for a small yard?

A small front yard redone with rock groundcover, a paver walk, a handful of shrubs and one drip zone comes in around $5,100 to $7,740 with the rates on this page. Small yards cost more per square foot than big ones, because setup, delivery and haul-off cost about the same whatever the size.

How much does artificial turf cost per square foot in Prescott?

Installed, about $9 to $11 per square foot for standard turf, $11 to $14 for denser, more natural looking turf and $14 to $18 for pet and play turf, materials and labor included. The base under the turf is a large share of that cost, and it is what keeps turf flat after a winter of freezing nights.

How much does landscape rock cost to install?

Rock and decomposed granite run about $2.50 to $3.50 per square foot installed for decomposed granite or gravel over weed barrier, $3.50 to $5 for river rock or decorative rock with edging, and $5 to $7.50 with large rock, boulders and steel edging. Removing an old lawn or rock first adds to the price.

Is the calculator a quote?

No. It is a ballpark for budgeting. Your exact price depends on granite and rock in the ground, slope and drainage, access for equipment, demolition and haul-off, and the final design. We walk the property, talk through the plan and give you an exact quote, and the estimate is free.

How do I measure my yard for the calculator?

Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. For odd shapes, break the area into rectangles and add them together. For a retaining wall, multiply the length by the height of the wall face. The Measure it option in the calculator does the math for you, and a rough number is fine for a ballpark.

Do you charge for the estimate or design consultation?

No. The estimate and design consultation are free. Installation projects start with a custom 3D design, so you can see the finished yard and make changes before any work begins.
